Join in our special opening day event featuring music by YMI a DUO, crafts for the young and not-so-young, artisans and inside and outside vendors, demonstrations of chain saw carving, stained glass, scherenschnitte, wood turning and MORE!! Our festival will feature delicious food by Caribbean Cuisine AND Beauregard’s Catering by Cathy Repp. Bring your little ones – kids activities at the festival include Appalachian Petting Zoo with BABY KANGAROO plus crafts by Mud & Maker Pottery Studio and The Arts Barn!

Lecture – Brass Relief Processes and Techniques

Attendance is free.
Brass Relief artist Rick Summons will host an informal lecture on some of his processes and techniques. Topics will include the Rick’s materials of choice, the bonded bronze and stone processes, and the lost wax method. Rick invites attendees to bring their questions along for a lively discussion that will follow the lecture (along with snacks from the Arts Barn!). This talk is open to the public. Fused Glass Workshop: Create Your Own Pendant

Saturday, May 18th from 5-7PM

Teacher: Amy Weidensaul
Cost: $35 per person, which includes materials, tools and snacks
Glass artist Amy Weidensaul will teach some of the basic techniques of fused glass to students in this two hour class. Participants will have a chance to put their imaginations to work on their own fused glass project, creating 3-4 pendants. Hope to see you there!

Lecture – Exhibiting in Art and Craft Shows

Attendance is free.
Wood artist Barry Middleton will host a discussion on the ins and outs of exhibiting in art and craft shows. A veteran of the circuit, Middleton will discuss the process from researching, choosing and applying to shows. All are encouraged to attend and to bring their questions with them! This talk is open to the public. Coffee, tea, and snacks will be provided. Please join us!

Workshop: Wheel & Wine BYOB Pottery Class

Come to The Arts Barn and create your very own Pebble or Swirly Bowl with Mud & Maker. In this unique two part workshop, participants will learn to hand-build their very own bowl that can be used for keys, candies and even for food, such as soups, cereals and more. Part one of the workshop will be at The Arts Barn on September 15th. For the second part of the workshop, you will glaze your piece at Mud & Maker studio in Pottsville at a date to be determined by you as your schedule permits. Feel free to BYOB (beer & wine only, no hard liquor).

Stained glass artist Deborah Powell Kramer will guide you through the process of stained glass panel construction using the copper foil method. You will learn how to layout a pattern, cut, foil, solder, clean, patina, and wax a glass panel. Several pattern choices are available for a 10 X 12 inch panel!! Design choices are varied!!! You can choose the design that works for you!! You will finish this course with a beautifully designed stained glass panel (with colors of your choice) ready to hang in your window (chain included)!!!

Cindy had her formal education in Fine Arts Painting, attending the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. She has written and photographed over 1,000 magazine articles for such national magazines as Outside, Backpacker, Paddler, Gray’s Sporting Journal, Outdoor Life, Canoe & Kayak, Adventure Cyclist, Sailing, Scouting and many others. Cindy will guide participants on a photography walk, teaching the composition and technique necessary to get that perfect shot. Please bring a sturdy pair of walking shoes, your camera, and get ready to take some great shots!

Cost: $35 per person, includes materials (a variety of colored reeds) and use of tools. Snacks and drinks will be provided!

Basket weaver extraordinare Jean Foutz will teach participants the basic principles of weaving a basket. She will guide them step-by-step through how to create a fruit basket, which participants will take home the very same day. No experience is necessary, only curiosity, creativity, and a little patience. Hope to see you there!

Soap Making Workshop

Learn to make soap at The Arts Barn!

Instructor: Lori Jo Whitehaus of Willow Creek Soaps
Cost: $32 per person, which includes all materials, tools and snacks and drinks

Curious how to make soap? Lori Jo Whitehaus will teach the old-fashioned “cold process” of combining sodium hydroxide, fats, and oils to create gentle and natural soaps. Participants will receive a beginner’s soapmaking guide, four bars of soap made during the workshop, and two additional bars of Willow Creek Soap. Additionally, Lori Jo will have kits on sale for participants to take home, to show off their new skills to friends and family (these must be ordered at least 24 hours prior to the workshop).

Stained Glass – Beveled Star

Create a stained glass star as a special keepsake or gift. No prior glass experience is needed!

Debbie Kramer will be creating a beveled star of approximate size 6″x4″. No cutting is involved. Students will choose their color: clear, blue, green, or turquoise. Construction of the star will include foiling the glass with copper, proper instruction in assembling, and soldering. Washing the piece and polishing to finish, participants will create a special keepsake or gift. No prior glass experience is needed. All glass, tool use, and instruction are included.

Back by popular demand, Richard Aldorasi will host another silk scarf workshop, using his own secret technique to create one-of-a-kind painted silk scarves. Richard will guide participants through his unique process to make a silk scarf to take home or give to a loved one. Make (and take) as many scarves as you like!
